The Canary Islands form one of Spain’s most fascinating autonomous regions. This Atlantic archipelago, located west of Africa, was already known to the Phoenicians and Greeks in ancient times. The area was later controlled by the Carthaginians and subsequently by the Romans, who incorporated the islands into their province of Mauretania Tingitana. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Canary Islands came under the influence of Arab seafarers and gradually fell under the Spanish Crown from the 15th century onward. The current name of the islands originates from the Latin Canariae Insulae – “Islands of Dogs,” referring to the large dog-like animals described by early European chroniclers.

The largest and most diverse island in the archipelago is Tenerife. Its dominant feature is Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, surrounded by a striking mix of climate zones ranging from lush green forests to dry volcanic landscapes. The capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is a vibrant port city with a rich colonial history. The western coast is home to the dramatic cliffs of Los Gigantes, while the south offers sunny beaches and ideal year-round sailing conditions. Tenerife has traditionally served as the gateway for sailors heading to the other islands.

From here, our route continues to Gran Canaria, often called a “miniature continent” due to its remarkable natural contrasts. From lush northern valleys to the arid dunes of Maspalomas in the south, Gran Canaria has always played an important role as a stopover on historic trade routes. Its capital, Las Palmas, founded by the Spanish in 1478, is one of the oldest cities in the archipelago. The colonial district of Vegueta, local ports, and traditional fishing villages still reflect the island’s rich maritime heritage.

The next destination is Fuerteventura, the second largest and geologically one of the oldest Canary Islands. The Romans once used the island as a source of purple dye, and today Fuerteventura is famous for its endless beaches, considered among the most beautiful in Europe. The island is shaped by Saharan winds, which form fine sand dunes and create its characteristic dry landscape. The original inhabitants, known as the Majoreros, left behind unique archaeological traces that complement the peaceful, authentic atmosphere of the island. With its steady winds and crystal-clear waters, Fuerteventura is a paradise for sailors.

The journey then returns to Tenerife, completing a loop of approximately 250 nautical miles. Thanks to their location and favorable climate, the Canary Islands are an ideal destination for year-round sailing. They offer a combination of dramatic volcanic scenery, historic towns, reliable trade winds, and attractive ports – the perfect mix for anyone seeking a unique maritime adventure.
